What If I Don’t Want This Pandemic To End?

We shouldn’t need a global crisis to finally accept change

Don’t get me wrong — of course, I want this pandemic to end. It has wreaked unprecedented havoc and chaos on every single one of us. We are collectively traumatized and will take a long time to recover from both the physical and psychological repercussions.

However, the one (and only) upside to the multiple lockdowns for me was that my employer had to allow all staff to work from home — full time. The government even mandated WFH. By law, all white-collar workers had to work from home for months, and any company forcing them to come into work would have faced high fines.

Back in the old days (for me, anything pre-2020 is now the old days), my employer bragged about how insanely generous they were for allowing all staff a maximum of 5 days per month for remote work. They felt incredibly avant-garde-ish and were proudly advertising this progressive mindset as their latest HR coup.

And now suddenly, 5 days became all day every day, for a very long time.

Yes, I am well aware that for many, WFH was another personal disaster embedded in the already ongoing global disaster. But for many others — like myself — WFH was a blessing in…
