“I never learned how to stop!”

My friend’s words instantly got my attention. He recently went through a divorce. As expected, over the last few months, he’s been beating himself up. He loves his ex-wife. He loves his kids. They love him. To make matters worse, the primary cause that led to the divorce was completely his choice. He had good intentions. But day after day, sometimes without even realizing it, he chose work. As a result, day after day, his wife felt like less and less of a priority.

“I can’t believe I chased clients instead of spending time with my wife and running after my kids!” he told me. “I didn’t consider myself a workaholic. But even when I wasn’t working I was thinking about it!”

As a married father of two young kids, his words landed extremely close to home. Like my friend, I don’t need Gary Vaynerchuk yelling at me each morning to get to work. Starting is easy for me. I’m ambitious. I like what I do.

But as they say — inside your biggest strength lies your biggest weakness — and without a doubt, my biggest challenge is learning how to control my passion for work so it doesn’t control me. After all, a…
