“I know why you’re tired all the time!” my dad said after I finished complaining about my job over the delicious turkey leg my mom had made. “You’re doing something you weren’t meant to do!”

The year was 2008. The day was Thanksgiving. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. “Are you serious?” I shot back. “You encouraged me to take that job! You said it’d be good for me! Time and time again you told me not to leave it!”

“Look at you!” he replied. “It has been good for you! But you’ve reached the point where you’ve learned what you needed to learn and it’s time to move on!”

He then finished his speech by saying something that I hated to hear, but like a lot of my dad’s advice, it turned out to be right on — “It will take seven jobs before you find the work you love!”

“You’re so lucky! How did you end up in Spain? How did you end up becoming a coach and writer? I want to do what you do!”

I don’t get asked this a lot. But it comes up from time to time when talking with some young people. Many of them seem to think I made…
