I Was a Lyft Driver for 3 Years. It Was the Worst Job I’ve Ever Had
If the company treats its workers as liabilities and not assets, no one should be working there
I’ve worked in retail as both a cashier and manager for grocery stores and convenience stores. I’ve worked as a supervisor for a pizza chain. I was a freelance writer in the music industry for seven years, a web developer as a side-hustle, and currently write about the New York Mets on RisingApple.com. I also dabble with other projects such as podcasts and graphic design.
But by far, the worst job was driving for Lyft (and Uber).
Now before you ask if one is “better” than the other, yes. It’s Lyft. Lyft is better than Uber.
I’ll explain why, but it’s important to understand why my experience was so bad that I would never recommend the job to anyone.
The money isn’t that great
For the first two-and-a-half years, I drove around southeast Michigan and the suburbs of Detroit. Now I live in East Lansing, Michigan, just outside of Michigan State’s campus.
Detroit isn’t as busy as bigger cities like New York, Los Angeles, or Chicago, but it certainly wasn’t dull. Most days, my pay would average to be around $18…
