When the pandemic flipped the world upside, I was already struggling with balancing my work.

Now, it was a major career crossroads.

As much I convinced myself I could keep all the plates spinning — business owner, writer, editor and everything else — the reality was more complicated. Many of the plates were beginning to lose momentum, their spin slowing to more of a wobble. I showed up to work with writing on my mind and wrote into the night with my thoughts clouded by the following days’ to-do list. With the quality of my output slowly reducing across the board and my focus quickly unraveling, it was evident I couldn’t juggle the various ventures anymore.

Throw in the global pandemic that made the conditions my business operated within untenable — it closed the hospitality industry, the sector we worked in — and it was clear that I had a difficult decision to make. Should I hold on to something I had dedicated so much of myself to or jump headfirst into a potential career that showed signs of early promise?
