Ten million Americans lost their jobs during Covid-19. Throughout 2020, they left the workforce in droves due to furloughs, layoffs, and voluntarily exits for a variety of reasons including having to homeschool their children, work dissatisfaction, burnout, or a lack of career opportunities.
As things start to open back up as we emerge from the pandemic, you might find yourself among the many looking for new opportunities. As such, you’ll want to ensure that you stand out from the masses by having a strong hook. Here are 5 steps for regrouping and reformulating your personal brand:
- Identify your value proposition. What do you have that sets you apart from others in your space? Come up with a value proposition statement that describes those traits that makes you unique. Identify and include 3–4 keywords that demonstrate your value and that shine a spotlight directly on wonderful, fabulous you.
- Pinpoint your skills and areas of expertise. What are you good at and what do others go to you for help with? Where can you add value to a company and how can you help them with your skills? You’ll use this information to sell yourself and find your place within an organization.
- What are you passionate about and what are your values? What do you love and what drives you? Where do your values come in? Do you have a strong work ethic? Or play the role of peacemaker? Or love to make a difference in your community? Let potential employers know.
- Create an elevator pitch that you can use to describe yourself. An elevator pitch is a 3–4 sentence pitch that you’ll use to describe yourself in a professional setting (like an interview). Use the information in steps 1–3 to pull yours together. It should clearly describe who you are, what you do, and what makes you different from others like you. You should practice and memorize this pitch to rattle off during interviews or times when you are meeting someone new (you just never know, so be ready).
- Network and build visibility. Unfortunately, no one is going to knock on your front door and offer you that dream position. You are going to have to put yourself out there. Look for professional associations that you can join, as well as groups on Facebook and LinkedIn. Stay active in these groups by joining the conversation. The more you engage, the more others (including important decision-makers) will engage with you. At the same time, look at other ways that you can build your visibility and your brand including blogging, podcasting, speaking, and contributing to media outlets. The more others get to know you, the more opportunities will come to you in the long run.
